Stress and Infertility

Stress is a common aspect of daily life. Women constantly juggle a career, housework, friends and family in their busy schedules. When a woman decides to settle down and start a family it brings new stresses and questions. When is the best time of the month to conceive? Should it have been happening sooner or am I on track? How long is too long to wait to seek treatment if I’m not getting pregnant? When searching for those answers many find it to be an embarrassing topic which makes them fearful to approach their doctor or physician right away.

Every woman’s body is different and stress affects each person in an individual way. Although, there has not been a scientific link between stress and infertility many doctors recommend lower stress related activities and encourage healthy lifestyle choices like walking and eating healthy. Studies have found that couples who reported feeling happy and relaxed compared to a stressful month actually improved their chances of conceiving.

The hormones like cortisol or epinephrine, which rise and often remain high during times of chronic stress, may play a key role in preventing pregnancy in women by suppressing ovulation. Others have found that adrenalin, the hormone that is released by our bodies during high stress and stressful times, signals to a woman’s body that conditions are not ideal to conceive. Adrenaline also inhibits woman from using the hormone progesterone which is essential for fertility.

Tips to fight against daily stress include:

  • Get enough sleep. Never underestimate what a good night’s sleep can do for your body.
  • Exercise. Even something as simple as a walk after work can help!
  • Meditate and/or start practicing Yoga.
  • Seek counseling if you feel necessary.
  • Follow a healthy diet. The proper amount of nutrients will make you feel well balanced.

Remember to seek advice from your medical Doctor before changing your daily routine.
