Hart of Dixie actress Jaime King went public this summer with an Instagram photo of her 10 month old son with a caption that explained she suffered from the infertility disease PCOS. September has been named Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) awareness month. PCOS is one of the most common female endocrine disorders affecting approximately 1 out of every 15 women of reproductive age (12-45 years old) which can cause infertility. There is no cure for this common and silent fertility disease. With various treatment options for patients now available new approaches are taken to diagnosis and treatment the disease in order to allow women to conceive.
After welcoming her first child, son James Knight last October, Jaime has opened up about the struggles she faced during her painful years of trying to conceive, pregnancy and childbirth in her instagram post which has since been taken down. She explains:
“For all the struggling women & moms out there that think they are alone – This is the truth about conceiving my son and struggles after. 8 yrs of pain and undiagnosed PCOS & Endometriosis. 9 doctors until… diagnosed me & saved my life from a severe ectopic, 5 miscarriages, 5 rounds of IVF, 26 IUI’s, most with no outcome, 4½ years of trying to conceive, 26 hours of brutal labor, early delivery b/c of sudden preeclampsia, tearing and tearing after the stitches were in once I was home, milk supply issues, painful mastitis, uncontrollable crying while breast feeding, worked until the day before I [gave] birth and went back after 6 weeks after because I was afraid of letting others down.”
Other celebrities like The Biggest Loser trainer, Jillian Michaels, have spoken out on her life with PCOS to shed light on this common disease that about 30% of women have at least some characteristics of. It is important for women to know that yet there is no cure, there are treatment options available that your doctor will determine are best for you.
