Coping with Infertility during the holidays

Holidays are stressful for everyone, but even more so for those looking to
start a family. Those suffering with infertility have to find ways to cope
with the holidays. Receiving photo cards of friends and family’s little
ones can pull on heartstrings and make it very difficult for a couple who
has yet to conceive or carry a child to term. Below are some tips to help
with the holiday baby blues:

1. Don’t expect perfection and don’t expect to be happy. It may be
quoted as the most wonderful time of the year, but it is ok to grieve during
this time of year. Allow yourself to be sad and don’t expect yourself to be
happy just because “tis the season.”

2. Find ways to have a childfree season. Everyone thinks of the
holidays with expressions of children and their childhood, so plan a ski
trip or a cruise or a trip to warmer weather during the holiday.

3. Be selective of the parties you are invited to. Skip the ones where
a lot of children or pregnant women may be present. It is OK to say no.

4. Finally, don’t feel bad about missing out on family festivities.
You may feel that you will get into the grove, but constant reminders with
nieces and nephews running around could make the time difficult.

Remember you and your partner are going through a trying time. Those that
love you will understand and support you. During the holidays you can over
indulge in yourself and your partner. Plan a nice evening for just the two
of you. Start your own family traditions and share your feelings with your
partner so the two of you are on the same page and understand what each of
you is feeling.
